Walking through the mall especially throughout the winter season, I see a plethora of cranky and/or crying children. While the moms or dads have shed their hats, scarves, and coats, there sits their precious bundle in the stroller complaining away. When I say their precious bundle that truly is the case for there is a bundle. Either in the stroller or being held by the hand, their child is still bundled up with a hat, scarf, and coat done up to their neck. Remember, once inside they need to remove outer wear to make their precious bundle comfortable and happy. After all, the parent adjusted to the inside temperature but perhaps didn’t think that their child might want or need the same. A happy child means happy shopping for daddy and/or mommy!

I want to encourage you to be a parent: not to be your child’s best friend but to be a parent. What does a parent do? They parent: teaching, training, disciplining, loving, guiding, encouraging, and supporting but nonetheless, they parent.

I have seen so many parents (both first timers and seasoned) who are more concerned with being a friend than being a parent. Sometimes it seems as if the parent is the child and the child is the parent, because I see the child directing what happens in the family instead of the other way around. I see parents whose whole lives are directed by what their child wants to do and eat. Rather than parenting their child, they give in to maintain peace. But remember the old adage: what you compromise to keep, you will ultimately lose.

Please be a parent. For example: If you decide to eat out, you choose the restaurant. Or, you give them a few choices that you feel comfortable with and is within your budget. It shouldn’t always be their choice. We should know that we don’t say to a toddler, “Are you ready to go to bed?” We tell them, “It is time to go to bed.” You as the parent make the decision, not them. And even if they bawl and squall, it is still time to go to bed. Their response doesn’t dictate the outcome of the decision. That is parenting.

Just as our teenagers shouldn’t be telling us they are going out, we shouldn’t be responding, “When will you be back?” They should be asking for permission to go out, not making the decision. Then, we as parents decide if we will allow them to go out as well as the parameters they must work within. I used to tell our children that before they asked for something they should have the “who, what, why, and when” ready to tell us. Then they had a better chance of getting our permission to do something. It was the same with our private school; before a student asked to do a particular thing, they were to tell us the who (is involved), what (are you planning), where (is it going to be happening), when (is it happening and for how long), and why (do you want to do this or why do you have to do this). Only then will you as parents have all the necessary information to make an informed decision when giving your permission. Be a parent!

Do you read with your children or do you R-E-A-D with your children? There is a huge difference between reading and reading with complete comprehension. My grandson was reading to me today. (He is homeschooled and I sometimes get to help out.) He was not missing any words or inflections such as pausing at commas, letting his voice stop for periods, and lifting when he encountered a question mark, etc. But when I inquired what a particular word meant (brush), he thought it was a brush for your hair. In the context of the story that made no sense at all, but he was willing to keep reading. I stopped him and explained that “brush” could also mean small undergrowth in/near woods, smaller pieces of wood than logs, or broken down branches. A few sentences later, I asked him to explain a sentence about a baker needing the brush to start his fires. Again he wasn’t sure. So using questions such as: What does a baker do?, Why did the baker need a fire?, I helped him by explaining that this story was written about long ago. That helped him to realize the fire was for baking in an oven fuelled by fire. By asking those questions, he came to the correct conclusion because I led him in the correct direction. He was happy because HE figured it out. I was happy because he knew what he was reading. It wasn’t just Grandma explaining and giving the answer. He deducted on his own by properly asked questions. Now even though he wasn’t happy to stop the story on these points, it reinforces the need to read with understanding. If we just allow our children, especially homeschooled children, to read silently only and especially to read without comprehension questions, we do them a great disservice. Pushing them through their readers to just complete the list is not enough. Oral reading, as well as comprehension, must be built “line upon line, precept upon precept” so that their foundation is strong and their understanding is complete.

I am not suggesting you stop them every other word or even on every page, but choose a word or a phrase or an event in the story that involves a different meaning of a word or a different take on meaning and question them about it. You will be ensuring a better future for them and it only takes a few additional minutes.

John 10:10-11 (NKJV)
10 The theif does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for his sheep”

The devil comes to Steal, Kill, and Destroy, but JESUS comes to give abundant life! These two verses show a very strong contrast — Life vs. Death — Which one will you choose!

Who are we in Christ?

We need to know who we are in Jesus in order to experience His Abundant Life! Let’s look at some scriptures that reveal who we are in Christ!

2nd Corinthians 5:17
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

1. We are new creations – Old things are gone; all things are brand new (Spirit-level)

2nd Corinthians 5:21
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

2. We are God’s righteousness birthed in Jesus. (We live and operate in God’s righteousness!)

1st Corinthians 2:16
16 For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

3. We have the mind of Christ (we’re called to think and speak like Jesus – nothing is impossible)

Ephesians 2:1-6
1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us,
5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
6 and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,

4. We’ve been made alive in Christ (our Spirit has been energized to live in the Zoe life of God)

5. We’re no longer caught in sin, trespasses, the course of this world; we’re free of the ways of the world — flesh and soul-realm!

6. We’re seated in authority — the heavenly places where Jesus sits and reigns. (sin has no more dominion over us)

Colossians 2:9-10
<sup>9 </sup>For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

7. We are complete in Jesus — the fullness of God resides within us.

1st John 4:4
4 You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

8. We have overcome the world, the devil and all that he represents.

9. The greater one (the Holy Spirit) lives within us and empowers us.

Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
